Parsley and What It's Good For

SUNDAYS IN THE GARDEN/ JULY 12TH, 2020

Today we are going to be taking a look at another one of the herbs in our heritage herb garden. Today’s herb of choice is Parsley!

Parsley is a biannual plant, meaning that it produces seeds in the second year of growth.

Parsley has a wide range of uses. In cooking parsley is often used in sauces as it has a light taste. It can be found in most Italian sauces, including pasta sauce and pizza sauce. It can be used as a garnish on meat dishes, try it on a roast!

Historically the roots, leaves and seeds of parsley have all been used medically for a number of purposes. Parsley can be used to help relieve coughs, as a diuretic, to help treat kidney issues, and to bring on delayed menstruation. It can also help relieve itchiness from mosquito bites!

One warning that we did find while researching this herb is that it should not be used too much while pregnant, as it can cause pre term labour.

While planting your garden one thing you might want to keep in mind is that parsley is an excellent companion plant to tomatoes! If you plant parsley next to tomatoes, the bugs that would normally be attracted to the tomatoes go for the parsley instead, and the smell of the parsley helps to mask the smell of the tomatoes!

Thats all for today from the currently sunny garden at O’Hara, we must say the rain we got last night was much needed and made the gardens much happier!
