Whirligigs For The Kids

FOR THE KIDS/ AUGUST 29TH, 2020

Welcome everyone! For our last Saturday we have another pick up craft for you here at the Visitor Centre. Stop by and get your own whirligig from a basket on the front porch.

What is a whirligig you might ask? Well it is a toy that has been around for centuries. These simple toys were made by Indigenous Peoples out of clay, bone and leather strips long ago. They continued to be popular, especially during the great depression, as they are simple to make and fun to play with.

To use a whirligig you simply hold the two ends of the string, on ours where the beads are, and wind it up by turning it repeatedly away from you to wind up the strings. You then pull the strings tight and watch it go!

While our kits are pre-made, you can design your own patterns to add and colour them with paint, markers, or your technique of choice and make it your own!
