Nasturtiums: The Nutrient Packed Flower

SUNDAYS IN THE GARDEN/ AUGUST 16TH, 2020

Today we are going to take a look at a species of flower that has much more to it than meets the eye!

Nasturtiums are native to Peru and Bolivia. Originating in the New World they were taken to Europe in the 16th century for medicinal purposes. Another name for this plant was Jesuit’s Cress.

Nasturtiums grow in a variety of colours and are considered to be an easier flower to plant from seeds if you are looking to garden with the kids!

The entire nasturtium plant is edible! The plant is known to be an excellent source of vitamin C, as well as manganese, iron, flavonoids, and beta carotene.

The entire plant has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that make it helpful in the treatment of urinary and respiratory infections. It can also help in easing the symptoms of colds.

Nasturtiums have a mildly pepper like taste and smell similar to mustard. The leaves and flowers are good in salads among other dishes.
