Shoo Fly
WHAT IS IT WEDNESDAY/ JULY 29TH, 2020
Have you ever wondered what the strange looking leather nets are hanging in the display shed at O’Hara? Well today you are going to find out!
These artifacts are vintage horse fly nets. Donated by Mrs. O’Hara Maines, these fly nets would have been used to keep flies away from horses, especially during the hot summer months.
With horses being used for farm work, as well as transportation, it was important to keep flies off of the horses so that they didn’t get distracted.
These handy nets could prevent the horses from bucking, as well as preventing irritation on the horses bodies.
These nets, while not a necessity, would have made the horses and their riders much happier.
