Feverfew For Fewer Fevers

SUNDAYS IN THE GARDEN/ JULY 26TH, 2020

Today we are going to be looking at Feverfew from the herb garden here at O’Hara. As the name suggests Feverfew has the ability to help reduce fever and many other unique uses.

Feverfew is a perennial herb with very beautiful white flowers. It has been used for centuries as a way to reduce fever and pain. In addition to this it can be used to help cure migraines. Eating 3-5 fresh leaves daily is said to reduce and eliminate migraines. Be warned though, the leaves have a very bitter taste, so if you are going to try this it’s recommended to put them on a sandwich to hide the taste. Alternatively, you can now get it in capsule form.

Infusions made from the leaves can be used as a mild disinfectant topically and if you put dried leaves in a bag it can help keep moths away!

With all of these benefits it seems feverfew is a no brainer. However, it is possible to develop mouth ulcers and skin irritation from its use. It is also not recommended for pregnant women, as it can cause uterine contractions.

These seemingly innocent pretty flowers have many benefits that make it a great addition to your herb garden. But as always make sure you research plants before using them for possible side effects.
