The Key To Efficiency
WHAT IS IT WEDNESDAY/ JULY 22, 2020
Welcome back everyone! Today we are going to be looking at an artifact that at the time of its invention forever changed the cooking industry, resulting in the loss of jobs.
The artifact of the day is an antique brass meat jack. This meat jack pictured to the right is dated around 1830.
The meat jack was used to swivel meat back and forth while it was cooking over a fireplace. Before the invention of the meat jack, this was done by a person who had to stand by the fire and rotate the meat.
It is wound up with a key similar to a clock key. The round door you can see in the picture was pushed to the side to reveal where the key goes in.
The embossment near the bottom features a tree and the name John Linwood. It also has the word Warranted on the front. The number 7 is on the bottom, indicating that it can hold 7 pounds of meat.
The invention of the meat jack made cooking easier, but like many inventions resulted in the loss of jobs. It certainly made it easier for cooking to be done on a family homestead!
Thats all for today, we hope you enjoyed learning about this revolutionary cooking tool!
